Once again the students from Recklinghausen and Gelsenkirchen were working together with students from Japan. Together with the Kobe City University of Foreign Studies we participated as a joint delegation in the biggest UN simulation worldwide.

After months of preperation we were in best shape to represent the interests of our assigned member state, South Africe, in the several UN committees in New York City.

The negotiations were concentrating on fighting counter terrorism, establishing sustainable goals and many more topics. All delegates did a great job and were included in the work of important working papers that were all adopted as resolutions in the final voting procedure.

Some delegates who enjoyed NMUN for the second or even third time, expanded their experiences by applying as chair. They got the job at the PBC, ECOSOC and the SC.

The visit at the UN headquarter is every year the highlight of the conference. Due to schedule issues this year the opening ceremony was held at the place where it really happens instead of the closing ceremony. Several keynote speaker were talking about the importance of the simulation and were inspiring all delegates to do the very best during the 4 days of the conference.

At the end our efforts were rewarded (once again) with an award as honorable mentioned delegation. A great archievement!

For a period of five days 24 students (18x WHS, 6x KCUFS) made their way to Midtown Manhattan in order to represent delegates from the Republic of Korea. A massive knowledge on substantive matters were for this role as important as the competence to act by United Nations rules and procedures during the UN conferences in several committees from the 19th to the 23th of March 2017.

The exhausting preperation paved the way to successfull days with diplomatic negotiations, well-considered cooperations with other UN member states and the hard work on voteable resolutions adressing global issues.

At the end their ambitions were rewarded with an award certificating the great work of the multi-national students. The NCAA, host of NMUN, was recognizing the delegation of both universities as an honorable mentioned delegation.

At the last day the conference and contribution of the more than 3.000 students from over 30 nations were accredited by long applause in the General Assembly Hall within the United Nations Headquarters in New York City. Keynote speaker Mr. D. Stephen Mathias, himself Secretary-General at NMUN 1977 and working actually for the UN today, was calling upon spreading the word about Nation Model United Nations all over the world when returning home, before the present delegates voted in favor for the adjourning of the meeting until March 2018.

Especially he was highlighting the concentrated work on the on-going campaign for Germany as a non-permanent member of the UN security council in the years 2019-2020. The decision on that will be in July 2018. The Federal Republic of Germany was holding the non-permant membership of the SC last time from 2011 to 2012. The government in Berlin has long argued for reform of the UN body and a permanent seat for itself.

Afterwards the students had the opportunity to get some more information about the politicial behaviour of their assigned country, the Republic of Korea, and the work of the permanent mission in general, in an open question and answer part.

Mr. Hessler was compliant to answer and explain the mentioned topics to the very interested students.
